Towards Global Action for Prevention and Mitigation of Food Fraud
In April 2017 in Quebec, Canada, a global symposium was held to discuss the critical issue of food fraud and the challenges surrounding prevention and mitigation. The event gathered senior regulatory officials from around the world, representatives of leading international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and representatives of academic institutions, non-governmental organizations and industry. Participants called for the creation of a global coalition of thought leaders to prevent, mitigate and manage food fraud across the supply chain and action towards a universal approach to tackle these issues on a global scale. Following this first event and the clear recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius Commission at its 40th session in July 2017, Mars Global Food Safety Center, Huairou, China, the Department of Food Science at Université Laval Québec, Canada, Food Safety@Danone, Paris, France and the Institute for Global Food Security of Queen's University (QUB), Belfast, Ireland invites you to help shape the future of food fraud prevention at “Towards Global Action for Prevention and Mitigation of Food Fraud.”
The two-day event will focus on collaborative action through knowledge sharing and the development of key principles for a universal food fraud prevention framework. In addition to keynote sessions, participants will be invited to attend panels and working sessions with leading experts from regulatory bodies, industry, academia and NGOs and to take part in dialogue that will help shape the founding principles of a global prevention framework. The aim is to develop principles and framework that can be leveraged as part of the development of international guidance linked with the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC).
The objectives of the symposium are to:
-Identify what is needed to ensure effective collaboration amongst key stakeholders (i.e. industry, regulators, law enforcement, and academia) to help prevent food fraud incidents and support the integrity of the food supply chain globally, and foster a harmonized regulatory environment in this area.
-Identify overriding principles required to create a pre-competitive environment around global food fraud prevention.
-Initiate the development of a universal food fraud prevention framework to support international standards such as the Codex Alimentarius in the future.
